Paper Production & QC Operator

Type: temp-perm Sector: industrial Location: Wells
Hours: Shift working - see description Salary: £12.50 per hour Date Posted: 10/01/2022
Description:
Our Client, located in Wells, Somerset has a long and proud history specialising in the manufacturing of high-quality artists papers. This is a long term, career opportunity to become a highly skilled papermaker by joining their team of experienced papermakers who carefully make professional mould made papers, using one of the few remaining cylinder mould machines left in the world. Within production there are 3 shifts, and each Production Shift Team is comprised of a Shift Manager, a Machine Operator and a Production, Preparation & Quality Control Operative. The first thing to be aware of is that paper making is a highly skilled job so full training will be given. This position is responsible for making and checking the high-quality paper produced. Duties will include preparing the fine paper pulp before production (which can be physically demanding) with materials going into the “plupper” mix & vat such as wood pulp and china clay. Once production commences one reel of paper can take up to 3 hours to manufacture on a cylinder mould machine. During this time there is a lot of work to undertaken including rigorous quality control testing. There can be up to 60 QC tests including eye inspections, physical, numerical, computer & chemistry tests. This is an important job, requiring a good ability to learn, a high level of attention to detail, an ability to problem solve and an acceptance that the role can be both physically and mentally demanding. The Client would like to recruit for this post, initially through the Agency, using a 12-week temporary to permanent trial period at which time a review will be conducted. Upon the successful completion of this trial period and review, this post will transfer to direct, permanent employment with the Client. This role requires working a 12-hour shift pattern including Days (06.00 to 18.00) and Nights (18.00 to 06.00). A worked example of the shift pattern across a month would be as follows: 3-day shifts followed by 3-night shifts, then 3 rest days followed by another 3-day & 3-night shifts. Then a prolonged break for the remainder of the month which can range from 9 to 14 rest days. Whilst the length of this prolonged break varies from month to month (within these confines), there is at least one week each month when there is no production. This way of working equates to average weekly working hours at 34 and involves working 12 to 13 twelve hour shifts each month. The successful candidate will possess a good work ethic (keen, willing, and able to learn) and will be interested in securing a career (and the training that goes with it) as a skilled papermaker. Whilst full training will be provided, a manufacturing background is preferred (but not essential) and some engineering ability would be an advantage. The successful candidate will have the aptitude to learn and undertake quality control testing which will involve physical, numerical & chemistry testing and recording result data on a variety of computer systems. Regarding practicalities: due to the shift pattern, Applicants will need be over 18; due to the physical demands of the job, Applicants will need to be physically fit to undertake a variety of manual handling tasks and to work on their feet across a 12-hour shift; due to working as part of a small shift production team, dependability, good timekeeping, and attendance will be essential. The starting hourly pay rate for this assignment will be £12.50 per hour (for the first 12 weeks of temporary service, being the “temp to perm” trial period). The annual salary for this role is £23,000 p.a. (upon the successful completion of a 12 week, temporary to permanent trial period). With further opportunities for progression in both skills & salary. For example, after the 1st year within this role (with the experience gained and the training provided) it would be envisaged that you would become a Multi-Skilled Operative – able to take on more responsibilities and to command a higher salary.
