Permanent, full-time opportunity. Location: Evercreech, near Shepton Mallet, Somerset. Quantity Surveyor (post graduate opportunity). Our Client is a successful and growing water services company with experienced and qualified teams “in the field” providing maintenance and installation services for a range of customers from developers, their site agents, utility companies to councils. The projects they deliver can range from installing water mains on a new development site to service pipe installation and maintenance or a lead replacement scheme for a utility company or council. Commonly now known as a Water Asset Self-lay Provider (SLP), they are the leading provider of self-lay water assets in the South of the UK. At their Head Office, near Shepton Mallet in Somerset, they have an exciting opportunity for a Quantity Surveyor to work alongside and report to the Operations Director. The key responsibility within this role will be to ensure projects are delivered on budget and meeting their contractual obligations. This will involve the production of project lifecycle data which will require an understanding of the civil engineering market to ensure the data accurately reflects the costs, capability, and capacity to complete the works to spec. Examples of duties and responsibilities will include: • Assisting in the preparation of tender documents, contracts, budgets, bills of quantities & other documentation. • Accurately tracking changes to the design &/or construction work, adjusting budget projections accordingly through the reforecasting process • Overseeing the procurement of the services of contractors &/or subcontractors who work on the project ensuring transparency of rates & recoverable charges. • Measuring & valuing the work done on site during the project lifecycle & on completion to ensure all deviations to plan are accurately costed & included in the application for payment. • Reading construction drawings & appreciating construction processes. • Understanding applicable building law & regulations, as well as health & safety matters, tax & insurance & contract law, so that the legal implications of any decisions are understood in advance. • Liaising with the client & other construction professionals, such as site managers, project managers & site engineers to ensure the work can be completed within cost projections. • Lead on lessons learnt reporting for project closure ensuring a closed loop for feedback & implementation of identified actions. This is a superb opportunity for a recent graduate (with an industry related degree) ideally with some commercial experience (sandwich year, pre or post graduate experience) looking to launch their surveying career. The premise around this appointment is to develop the successful candidate with the business so an aptitude and attitude to learn will be key. Regarding qualifications, you will have some form of degree or educational background in Quantity Surveying (this could also include other industry related degrees and qualifications such as Civil Engineering &/or Construction Management and HND’s). Ideally, your course will have been accredited by RICS. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills and personal attributes: • Strong project management capabilities including planning & organising workload & working to strict deadlines. • Excellent numerical & IT skills. • The ability to manage complex & multiple bid opportunities simultaneously. • Good financial & commercial acumen. Capable of understanding pricing, costs, & profit. • An understanding of basic contract language. • A completer/finisher with exemplary attention to detail & focused on the end result. • Confident relationship builder with a proven ability to engage clients through excellent communication & presentation skills. • Able to think on their feet, assertive yet tactful. • Strong numerical, analytical, & problem-solving skills to support decision making. • Ability to motivate & empower team to deliver high performance standards. Given the semi-rural location of the Client’s Head Office (5 miles south of Shepton Mallet in Somerset), Applicants will need to be car owners/drivers and live within a reasonable, daily commute of Shepton Mallet (or be willing & able to relocate to within a reasonable commutable distance). The expected annual salary for this position is up to £30,000 (dependant on qualifications and experience) and the package includes Company laptop, phone, and life insurance amongst other benefits, along with 25 days annual leave plus Bank Holidays. This is a full-time (Monday to Friday), permanent, office-based role with WFH opportunities pending successful on boarding.
